Our name is officially registered with the United States Patent and Trademark Office. And the moment we saw the certificate, something powerful stood out. There are moments in a journey that feel symbolic of something much bigger than the milestone itself.
Recently, the name El Puente Institute® was officially approved and registered by the United States Patent and Trademark Office. At first glance, it may seem like a simple administrative step. A certificate. A legal recognition. A name protected.
But for us, it represents something deeper.
Over the years, many Latino professionals across the United States have had to learn how to navigate spaces where identity sometimes feels like something that must be softened, code-switched, or adjusted to fit the room. However, many of us have learned to move forward while balancing pride in who we are with the expectations of institutions that are still learning to embrace cultural differences.
In many ways, our organization has experienced a similar journey this past year.
Last year, as the DEI struggles began, we were asked thoughtful, and sometimes difficult, questions by our clients and people inquiring about working with us.
Questions like:
- Would your name, El Puente, be easier if it were in English?
- Can you change the name of your organization?
- Could parts of the website be simplified or even changed to remove any connection to DEI or Latinos?
Would certain language resonate better if adjusted to sound less DEI?
These conversations are not uncommon for organizations working at the intersection of culture, leadership, and systems change. And like many in our community, we have navigated them thoughtfully and respectfully.
Throughout 2025 and today, one thing has remained very clear for us.
The purpose of the El Puente Institute® has always been to build bridges. Between cultures. Between research and practice. Between leadership potential and opportunity.
That is what puente means. A bridge.
When the US patent certificate arrived, one detail stood out immediately. Across the top, in large letters, it reads United States of America. And just beneath it is the name El Puente Institute®.
Two identities on the same page.
For us, that image captures something powerful. It reflects the idea that cultural identity and national identity are not in competition. They belong together. They strengthen each other.
The story of the United States has always been a story of many languages, histories, and communities contributing to the future we are building together.
What this moment reminds us of is SIMPLE and not as complicated as many have made it. Many Latinos/Hispanics have spent years building bridges between cultures, languages, and expectations. We have learned how to move forward with pride in where we come from while contributing meaningfully to the institutions and communities we serve.
Seeing the words United States of America and El Puente Institute® on the same certificate is a quiet but powerful symbol of that journey. It reflects the idea that our Hispanic/Latino cultural identity is not something to set aside, change to make others feel comfortable, or reinvent in order to lead. It is part of the strength we bring to leadership.
And if a bridge is what our name represents, then this recognition is simply another step in expanding that bridge for the leaders who will cross it next.
This certificate is simply a reminder that there is space for that story to continue.
And we are honored to be part of writing the next chapter. Until then, El Puente Institute® will proudly represent its foundational Hispanic/Latino culture and welcome all others to join our mission.
The name stayed.
The mission grew stronger.
And the bridge continues to expand.
