As December arrives and the season of Navidad begins, many of us find ourselves reflecting. We pause to notice what has shaped us, what grounds us, and what carries us forward. For the Latino community, this reflection is more than a holiday tradition. It is cultural memory. It is an inheritance. It is the gift that arrives long before a wrapped present is placed beneath a tree.
Our culture teaches us that the holidays are not measured in lights, gifts, or glittering storefronts. They are measured in connection, in la mesa llena, in laughter echoing through living rooms, in bilingual prayers, in children running between the legs of elders, in tamales and posadas, and in abrazos that last longer than they need to.
These are not simply seasonal moments. They are leadership lessons in motion.
Our Culture as Leadership Formation
Latino/Hispanic leadership is not developed only in boardrooms or conference halls. It begins in small, everyday spaces where we learn how to love, respond, and lead.
We learn:
Familismo: Familismo teaches us that belonging is stronger than hierarchy. Respeto teaches us that dignity is non-negotiable. Personalismo teaches us that relationships build influence, not titles. Simpatía teaches us that kindness can open doors that strategy cannot. Colectivismo teaches us that we rise as a community and not alone.
When we name these cultural scripts and values, we awaken Cultural Intelligence (CQ) within ourselves and others. We begin to see leadership not as something we must imitate, but as something we already carry and are part of who we are.
Leadership has always looked like showing up for family, advocating for one another, creating space where voices are heard and honored, and carrying our ancestors’ dreams into rooms they were never allowed to enter.
This season reminds us that our culture is a GIFT.
Cultural Intelligence Begins with Cultural Clarity
As organizations strive to strengthen equity, belonging, and global awareness, Latino/Hispanic leadership offers a powerful pathway forward. When we understand our cultural scripts and how they shape behaviors, decisions, and relationships, we build bridges across differences with strength and confidence.
Cultural Intelligence grows when we reflect on the roots that formed us. We recognize our cultural assets as strengths and not limitations. We use our lived experience to lead with empathy and awareness.
This is the work of Latino/Hispanic leadership. This is the work of visibility and voice. This is how we honor the season with meaning and purpose.
A December Invitation
As Christmas lights go up and the year winds down, we offer this reminder:
Your culture is not something you outgrow.
It is something you grow from.
It is the gift that builds leaders.
It is the thread that holds the community together.
It is the bridge toward Cultural Intelligence in a diverse world.
Let us step into this season grounded in who we are and grateful for what built us.
Somos Cultura. Somos Líderes. Somos El Puente.
